The long-awaited iPhone 12 series was unveiled at a massive event. This time, a new model was released for those looking for a more compact-sized phone that does not weigh much in a world where screens are large and phones are approaching or crossing the 200-gram threshold. The iPhone 12 mini is the smaller sibling of iPhone 12 with nearly identical specifications. If you’re looking for a phone that’s better suited for one-handed use and are undecided between the expensive iPhone 12 small and the less expensive iPhone XR, here’s a comparison that will clear your doubts.

Display, Design And Durability
While the iPhone 12 and XR both have 6.1-inch displays, the new iPhone 12 has an OLED display, whereas the XR has a normal LCD. Because OLED panels have true blacks and a higher contrast ratio, they provide a richer visual experience on the new iPhone 12. It also has a substantially higher pixel density than the XR display, making it appear sharper and more crisp.
The iPhone 12 restores one of the most lauded designs in iPhone history, the iPhone 4, by replacing the sloped sides with an aluminium frame and a glass back. The aluminium frame made it feel a little light in an almost “cheap” fashion, but considering the cost reductions over the Pro models, it’s difficult to criticise. Given that the iPhone XR’s design has been around for three years, we applaud this beautiful revival of a retro design. The iPhone 12 also includes a new Ceramic Shield technology, which Apple claims will increase the robustness of your smartphone’s glass. Apple believes that this will result in improved drop performance and fewer cracked screens.
The iPhone 12 is available in a plethora of vibrant colours that are absolutely stunning in person. So, if you want to express yourself via your phone, you have a plethora of options to choose from.
Battery life, performance, and charging
Apple’s new groundbreaking A14 chipset will power the iPhone 12. The performance of this new 5nm technology was demonstrated in the most recent iPad Air. With nearly 12 billion transistors, it represents a major jump forward in performance. Apple claims blazing speeds and performance from this new CPU, and we trust them given Apple’s track record.
The iPhone XR uses the A12 Bionic processor from 2018. The A12 is a powerful processor that can stand on its own, but with increases in computing capability every year, two years makes a significant difference. Furthermore, if you’re in the market for a new smartphone today, it’s usually best to go with the one that will last the longest, and Apple’s A14 Bionic will be running iOS flawlessly for years to come.
The iPhone 12 fulfilled its promise when it came to battery life. On a full charge, you can easily get through the day. Under “normal” conditions, it usually concluded the day with 30% remaining. Even with heavier use, the battery should have enough juice to last. Both iPhones support wireless charging and fast charging, with the iPhone 12 offering faster 18W charging.
While the iPhone XR has a single 12-megapixel rear lens, the iPhone 12 sports twin 12-megapixel wide and ultrawide back lenses, giving it an immediate advantage. The iPhone 12 also has Night Mode, something the iPhone XR does not have. While the XR will still produce good low-light images, its software will fall short of that of the iPhone 12.
The iPhone XR and iPhone have similar 4K and 1080p video recording capabilities, however the iPhone 12 adds HDR video recording. While this isn’t a huge improvement, it’s worth noting.
Both the iPhone XR and the iPhone 12 have amazing, nearly similar cameras and photo or video capability – but camera technology has advanced significantly in the last two years. The iPhone 12 is unquestionably the winner here.
In comparisons, this is something you rarely notice, but it turns out to be a big concern for users as cellphones become heavier as they strive to fit more into them. The iPhone 12 small weighs only 133 grams and is roughly the size of an iPhone SE 2020. The iPhone XR, on the other hand, weighs 194 grams, which many consumers found to be too heavy.
Updates and software
Both of these iPhones devices are capable of running the most recent firmware, iOS 14. Because both of these gadgets will receive identical updates for years to come, it’s a foregone conclusion that they are a tie in this category.
The iPhone 12 supports 5G and is one of the first iPhones to do so. We’ve looked at 5G before, and while having 5G speeds is a cool party trick, access to actual 5G network coverage is limited to some large metro regions. This should not detract from the fact that a 5G phone is more future-proof than a 4G LTE phone, but don’t buy into the hype just yet.
While the iPhone XR and iPhone 12 both enable wireless charging, the iPhone 12 takes it a step further with MagSafe for iPhone. This technology, which helps you align your charger with your device’s wireless charging coils, is familiar to Apple Watch owners. Apple thinks that this will make charging more convenient and open up a whole new ecosystem of magnetically clip-on cases and chargers. There are just two cases available for now, and none of them scored well when we tested their charging capabilities.
